About the event

SPEAKER: STEFFEN HEIDRICH STATE ASSOCIATION OF SAXONY JEWISH COMMUNITIES, KDÖ.R

What image of Judaism do we have: Kippa, Torah, Star of David as symbols of a religious community? Or do we primarily see the community of Holocaust survivors? Today, stereotypical images mostly determine the non-Jewish view of the Jewish minority. This has changed significantly since the 1990s. Due to immigration from Eastern Europe, but also from Israel, the number of Jews living in Germany has increased tenfold. In addition, Judaism today is significantly more plural. There is a large number of religious self-images, new cultural initiatives and associations, new Jewish research institutes, several rabbinical seminars and, finally, international Jewish organizations are now active in Germany. The lecture briefly summarizes the developments of the last 30 years and provides an overview of the main currents, attitudes and actors.
