About the event

An event ofKonrad Adenauer Foundation. More information ontheir website

The day of remembrance on February 13, 1945 commemorates not only the physical destruction of Dresden, but also the innocent souls who lost their lives amid wars, destruction and the terrible legacy of National Socialism. However, this memory should also be understood as a moment of hope. In 1945, numerous bomb victims, including citizens of the Soviet Union, found their final resting place in the New Catholic Cemetery. In addition to the special memorial for the victims of the bombing, there are other memorials in the cemetery, including a memorial for the twelve members of the resistance group “Black Legion” and a circumscribed memorial that commemorates the victims of fascism from 14 nations. These sites tell stories of resistance to also honor this aspect of history. How can the memory of February 13th be kept alive in a sensitive and appropriate way? What individual fates can be found when searching for traces in the New Catholic Cemetery on February 13, 1945? Why is it important to remember the victims of fascism from different nations?

These and other questions will be addressed during this memorial event.

First Mayor Jan Donhauser will be present as a representative of the state capital Dresden.
