About the event

Until 1933, Dresden had international importance as a music city. Composers, performers and premieres of important works known far beyond Dresden determined the lively Dresden music scene. For example, Arthur Chitz worked as music director of the Dresden Schauspielhaus.

When the National Socialists came to power, musicians of Jewish origin were forced to leave the country or, like Arthur Chitz, murdered. Chitz was deported from the Old Leipzig Train Station in Dresden to the Riga Ghetto in January 1942 and died about two years later. Only a few Dresden musicians managed to make a new start in emigration.

The song recital “A Tiny Tear” is dedicated to highlighting Slovak and German artists with a Jewish background who worked in Dresden.

The program is led by musicologist Dr. Agata Schindler, whose book “A Tiny Tear. “The devastating influence of National Socialism on the lives of musicians in Central Europe” is the basis of the evening.
