Feminism and faith

Ein archäologischer Prozess der Werte
While our Community launched Women's Month in March, we followed an exchange on social media that moved us deeply. An exciting, multi-layered discussion arose about one of the most fundamental questions of our time: Are feminism and religion one hundred percent compatible?
What particularly pleased us was not only the intensity of the debate, but also the way in which it was conducted. Despite differing points of view, the exchange was characterised by mutual respect and an impressive sense of balance. This makes digital dialogue a real pleasure, even with people you have never met in "real life".
A look beyond the boundaries of one's own tradition
It was enriching to see how participants from different faiths contributed their perspectives. The contributions from Islam were particularly exciting, highlighting the considerable scope and potential for feminism.
In contrast, Christianity faced the challenge of being criticised without specific arguments – a phenomenon that is certainly also due to the brevity of social media. Here, we would like to engage in even deeper dialogue in the future in order to jointly question how deeply rooted certain rules and interpretations actually are in the sources.
The challenge: ideal vs. reality
Anyone who bases their life on firm values – whether in feminism or religion – is familiar with the tension between a beautiful ideal and its complex implementation in everyday life. Reconciling the two is not a finished state, but an ongoing process.
We experience this every day in our community life: structures, organisations and even individual reservations challenge us to reconcile different goals. However, this is not just a political struggle on the outside. Rather, it is an inner development of each individual to refine their own frame of reference and at the same time protect themselves from a great danger: fundamentalism.
„Compatibility can be achieved if one is not fundamentalist.“
We would like to emphasise this statement made by one of the participants in the discussion. Fundamentalism – in whatever form or guise it appears – often prevents conflicts from being resolved. It relieves individuals of the effort of understanding the world in all its complexity and closes the door to fruitful exchange. It is our task to work constantly on ourselves in order to better understand the world and our fellow human beings.
Judaism and Feminism: An Archaeological Search for Clues
When we look specifically at the Jewish religion, the search for compatibility often resembles an archaeological process. One must dig through thick layers of interpretations and centuries-old patriarchal structures to get to the original stories and insights that take the female perspective.
In doing so, we encounter approaches that are fascinating but also need to be viewed critically:
The narrative of "holiness": In ultra-Orthodoxy, it is often argued that women are exempt from many duties because they are inherently "holier". Although this is based on profound teachings, today it is unfortunately often used as a justification for existing structures rather than as an expression of a modern feminist attitude.
Legal foresight: Judaism had regulations early on that were very modern for their time – such as the right of women to obtain a divorce. The fact that the practical implementation over the centuries was often influenced to the detriment of women is another matter, but this is not found in the original texts.
The opportunity: developing values together
These examples are only points of contact, but they are an important starting point. The real opportunity lies in not just managing values as a community, but actively living them and making adjustments where the system shows weaknesses.
Perhaps this is one of the most important things^^ Have you experienced moments in your everyday life when faith and feminism have enriched each other? We look forward to reading your thoughts in the comments.
