Digitalization has fundamentally changed the way we consume knowledge. Yet, while streaming lectures or reading texts digitally merely represents new channels for traditional content, the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) heralds a theological and pedagogical watershed moment. When generative language models—such as ChatGPT, Claude, or specialized religious chatbots—suddenly act as interpreters of the Torah, the Bible, or the Quran, it touches upon the very core of how religious traditions are passed down.


Many people are reminded of the impact of the printing press, which did not bring only advantages from the very start. In the 16th century and beyond, people—and society as a whole—had to learn how to handle this technology, which was new at the time. To this day, scientific studies have repeatedly confirmed that printed texts are perceived as more credible than spoken or even handwritten ones.


The use of AI raises fundamental questions, particularly within Judaism, a tradition whose identity has rested for millennia on the dynamic, dialogic study of sacred texts. Can an algorithm grasp the spirit of a centuries-old debate? And what becomes of the religious community when learning shifts from a collective act to a solitary interaction between human and machine?


Benefits of AI in the study of sacred texts


It would be reductive to condemn the use of AI in religious education solely from a position of cultural criticism. It is not simply a case of "everything used to be better." For the study of complex, multi-layered texts, this technology offers tools of historic significance.


1. Accessibility and the democratization of knowledge

Classical texts—whether the Talmud, the writings of Christian Church Fathers, or Islamic Hadiths—are often composed in ancient languages ​​(Aramaic, Ancient Greek, Classical Arabic) and feature a complex, web-like, and nested structure. AI models can:

  • Break down complex grammatical structures in real time. Providing contextualized translations that go beyond rigid dictionary definitions.

  • Instantly finding and linking historical and geographical cross-references.


This makes traditional knowledge accessible to people who lack years of specialized study in language or texts. Here, AI acts as a tool for democratization, breaking down the walls of exclusive expert knowledge. Notably, Gutenberg’s invention faced fierce criticism for this very reason, as knowledge equates to power, and those in positions of authority felt threatened by it.


2. Personalization of the learning process


Each of us learns differently. A sophisticated AI system can adapt to a learner's individual pace, prior knowledge, and specific interests. It can explain a text in simple language for a child, while providing that same user—years later—with a profound philosophical analysis of the exact same verse. The machine’s infinite patience fosters a learning environment free from anxiety, where no question is too trivial or too repetitive. Prerequisites for this include having an idea of ​​what to ask of the AI ​​and formulating clear prompts (task descriptions).


3. Efficiency in creating synopses

For researchers and advanced learners, the AI’s ability to scan vast bodies of text for patterns, motifs, or rare terms is an invaluable asset. Tasks that once required decades of leafing through pages or memorizing massive volumes are now accomplished by AI in milliseconds. It can reveal theological connections between widely separated passages, thereby sparking new approaches to interpretation.


The desouling of the word: The downsides

Despite these groundbreaking possibilities, the uncritical use of AI in studying traditions and texts carries serious risks that challenge the very essence of faith and understanding.


1. The phenomenon of “hallucination” and the longing for authority

AI models are not knowledge databases but stochastic text generators. They calculate the most probable next word. In a religious context, this leads to a dangerous source of error: so-called “hallucination.” When an AI fabricates a theological justification or a quote—yet presents it with the utterly convincing tone of a scholar—it results in disinformation.


This is particularly problematic because people tend to place blind trust in texts that appear authoritative, whether in print or digital form (automation bias). In the realm of religious law, an erroneous AI response can have direct consequences for the lived practice of believers.


2. The Loss of Ambiguity and the Standardization of Thought

Religious traditions—with Judaism standing out particularly in this regard—thrive on a multiplicity of voices. The Talmud is not a law book providing ready-made answers, but rather a record of perpetual debate. Rabbi A says X, Rabbi B says Y, and the question often remains open.


AI models, however, tend to simulate harmony and consensus due to their optimization for user-friendliness. They summarize, smooth out rough edges, and tend to generate a "mainstream consensus." Consequently, productive friction is lost. The struggle for truth and the ability to endure contradictions and ambiguities—core characteristics of mature religiosity—are replaced by harmonious yet shallow syntheses.


3. Data Bias and the Entrenchment of Power Structures

Whoever controls the data controls the tradition. If an AI’s training data derives primarily from Western, Modern Orthodox, or specific denominational sources, the AI ​​will ignore the rich diversity of regional, progressive, or historically marginalized (such as female) voices. There is a risk of a monoculture of religious knowledge, unconsciously steered by tech corporations and their algorithmic filters.


Individualization vs. *Chavruta*: The Erosion of Community

Perhaps the most profound shift brought about by AI concerns not the factual level of learning, but the social and existential dimensions. Here, a stark contrast emerges between the highly individualized logic of modernity and the communal core of religious traditions—Judaism in particular.


Jewish Learning Culture: The Principle of *Chavruta*

At the heart of traditional Jewish learning lies the study hall (*Beit Midrash*). It is not a place of silent contemplation like a monastic library, but a place of noise. Study rarely takes place in isolation; instead, it occurs within the *chevruta* (Hebrew for "friendship"). Two learners sit facing one another—sometimes even shouting arguments back and forth—correcting and challenging each other as they grapple together to understand the text.

Learning in a *chevruta* is not merely a transfer of information; it is an ethical process rooted in relationship. The Allure of Isolation through AI

AI turns this principle on its head. It offers the promise of a perfect, tailor-made study partner—one that never tires, never contradicts (unless asked to do so), never has a bad mood, and is instantly available. This represents the ultimate form of individualization.


This convenience carries the risk of creeping isolation:

  • The loss of the "Other": When a chatbot becomes the primary dialogue partner for questions of meaning, the need to engage with real people vanishes. Real people are demanding, imperfect, and challenge us. AI, by contrast, flatters the user's ego

  • The illusion of self-sufficiency: The learner is lulled into the illusion that they no longer need teachers (rabbis, spiritual counselors, fellow believers) or a community to understand the scriptures. They become an isolated island.

  • Alienation from tradition as a way of life: Religious tradition is not merely studied; it is lived. You taste it when sharing a meal, feel it during shared prayer, and experience it in the midst of a debate at school. AI-driven learning reduces religion to a mere game of texts and information; it strips tradition of its relational dimension.


The Machine as Servant, Not Master

Artificial intelligence is unlikely to disappear from the study of scriptures and traditions; rather, it will become—and in many places already is—an integral part of it. A crucial task for religious communities today is to "sanctify" this technology by setting clear boundaries for it. It must be made our servant—a tool whose benefits aid us and whose limitations we fully recognize.


AI can and should be utilized as an excellent tool—as a responsive, interactive encyclopedia, a grammar coach, and a bibliographic assistant. However, it must never replace the human counterpart or take over the task of interpretation.


An algorithm can analyze a text, but it cannot embody it. It possesses no soul or moral conscience; it neither suffers nor celebrates. The transformation sought through the study of sacred texts—the inner maturation of the individual—does not occur in the vacuum of data streams, but rather within the real, often demanding, yet irreplaceable dialogue between human beings. The Jewish concept of shared study is therefore not an obsolete model, but perhaps one of the most effective antidotes to the looming digital loneliness of our time.


But what does all this mean in practical terms? How do I harness AI?


Practical implementation: The example of this article

To make the theoretical considerations regarding the use of AI in studying and understanding traditions tangible, it is worth looking behind the scenes: this very text emerged from a collaborative symbiosis between human and AI.
